Brighter Side is one of the best salad makers in Modesto. We frequently do take out from Brighter Side for lunch, and everything is fantastic. The ordering is done by phone, which is very easy, and the food is ready within 15 minutes. We then go pick it up, the transaction goes great, and then once the food is tasted, that is fantastic as well. If you aren't in the mood for salads, they also have sandwiches. The prices are very reasonable as well. Brighter Side is one of the best deli's we have around!

Often at lunch, what I'm craving is a good, solid sandwich. The Brighter Side is the place to go in downtown Modesto to fill that craving. TBS is located in an old Flying A gas station (remeber that great logo?) and is truly funky. The outside has been modified with a bit of old barn wood siding, there is an outdoor seating area that looks like my back yard (a little better kept up), and the inside has a wood stove for cold days. You enter through what was the office and place your order by writing it on a slip of paper with your name and leaving the slip on the counter, then exit to a hall way and reemerge into what was the service bays, now the sale counter and dining area. Here you pay and pick up your drink and your sandwich when it emerges from the kitchen. Behind the counter is the owner, who perpetually looks like he is ready to bag it and jump in the wagon with his surf board (in a good way--he's always smiling).

Today I had a "Genora"--a particular favorite, it is on a roll with roast beef, jack cheese, avocados, lettuce tomato--heated to melt the cheese. Along with a glass of their made-on-the-premises sun tea, this is manna--I was full and happy all afternoon.
Located at 13th and K Streets.

Sandwiches in Modesto, CA George Osner Feb 18, 1999 11:36PM - Chowhound message board from Google's cache.

Pretty basic chow, sandwiches. Modesto has many places
you can go to get a sandwich, but my easy favorite is
The Brighter Side, 13th & K Streets in downtown.
It's a funky place, run by folks who never got over being hippies. A converted service station (Flying A, if memory serves me), it has a peculiar flow--you enter from a side door into the sanwich prep area. Here you find squares of paper & pencils, with which you write your order & leave it on the end of the counter, then exit the other side, walk along the building, and enter the front door, then stand in line in the main room to
pay and receive your good, collect your food, get drinks, etc. The sandwiches are just great and named after people who work there--my fave is the Genorra, a roast beef & veg on roll, heated enough to melt the cheese on it.

Besides the usual fountain, there is excellent sun tea and freshly made lemonade--not too sweet, really lemony. the winter, inside is best, and there is a potbellied stove in the middle of the room making it delightfully warm. When the weather is good (which is most of the time in this part of the world), there is outside seating, both booths and picnic tables, all in a feced, vine-covered area.
Hey--just thinking about it, I'm going there for lunch tomorrow!
